President Yoon Suk Yeol will go on an eight-day tour of South America from Nov. 14-21 to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Peru and the Group of 20 Summit in Brazil.
Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo on Nov. 12 at a news briefing released the itinerary of the trip.
President Yoon on Nov. 15 in Lima will attend the APEC Summit, whose theme is "Empower, Include and Grow." In the first session of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, he will present Korea's cooperation methods for inclusive growth and support for the socially vulnerable.
He will also affirm Seoul's commitment to lead discussions on creating an environment for free and stable trade and investment as the chair country of next year's APEC Summit.
In the second session, namely the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting Retreat, the next day, the president will share his administration's plans to accelerate energy transition amid the global climate crisis and bolster regional cooperation for securing food security. At the event, he will formally receive the chairmanship for next year's APEC event from his Peruvian counterpart Dina Boluarte.
On Nov. 16, President Yoon will begin his official visit to Peru with an official welcoming ceremony, followed by a bilateral summit with President Boularte, signing ceremony for memorandums of understanding, event for bilateral cooperation in the defense sector and joint news conference.
President Yoon on Nov. 18 will head to Brazil to attend the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro; the event seeks to build a just world and sustainable planet. In the event's first session, he will present Seoul's contributions to fighting hunger and poverty. At the third session the next day, he will propose international cooperation for overcoming the climate crisis and transitioning toward clean energy.
Deputy Adviser Kim said the presidential office will arrange bilateral summits with key countries such as Vietnam, Mexico, Brunei and Japan during President Yoon's attendance at the two global events.
The official added that at the APEC and G20 summits, President Yoon will stress the need for a rule-based international order to ensure a sustainable global future and the importance of international solidarity to respond to military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
According to reports from domestic media such as Yonhap News, the Office of the President is discussing a potential meeting between President Yoon and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump while the former is in South America, as well as bilateral talks with China and Japan and a trilateral summit with the U.S. and Japan.
